Durante este tiempo, hice entrevistas a residentes de casas de reposo sobre el tema de la relajación. Mi hipótesis fue que las personas que vivían en espacios diseñados para el reposo estarían excepcionalmente calificadas para hablar sobre el tema. I spent some time in a city known for its population of retirees. During this time, I interviewed residents of rest homes on the topic of relaxation. My hypothesis was that people living in spaces designed for rest would be uniquely qualified to speak on the subject. I asked my collaborators what images, if any, came to mind while relaxing. I then brought them photographs based on their replies. The resulting project became a series of pictures and written responses curated by the participants. The project was conceived of while visiting another housesitter who would check the news while sitting by the pool. We started a collection of headlines and photographs of pools. The headlines and pool photographs were combined into six books containing tracking devices. Three books were given to libraries, three books were given to cultural workers. In contrast to the online articles collected to make the books, which use tracking methods to refine and deliver more content, the agreement was to do nothing with what we learned about the circulation of our project. Our hope was the repetitive nature of our material would prompt our audience to engage with something else. periódico de ayer Durante un mes, intenté revisar las noticias todos los días mientras cuidaba una propiedad cuya principal responsabilidad era ver cómo está una piscina. This project revisits the alternative photographic process, combining it with materials used in documentary practices today: thermal paper containing Bisphenol A (BPA) or Bisphenol S (BPS) and chemically treated cotton rag paper. These materials, though problematic, are industry standards thanks to their efficiency. Phenols in thermal paper act as a developer for quick, inkless printing with just the application of heat. Chemically treated cotton boosts crop yields, and is therefore the most commercially available. As the dangers of microplastics and pesticides continue to be researched, these photograms explore parallel usages of hazardous substances in both the history of photography and our contemporary norms around record keeping, productivity, and trade.
